NO BAR TO MAORIS ENTERING AUSTRALIA

(Rec. 9.55). CANBERRA, May 6. No restrictions of any kind will be placed by the Australian Government upon the er<try into Australia of Maoris. This undertaking has been communicated to the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, by the Immigration Minister, Hon. Mr Calwell. The question was realised recently in Parliament, here. Mr CalweU said that Maoris would be treated in the same way as other Polynesians. This produced an instant reaction from New Zealand, whose representatives complained about discrimination, ft is understood that Hon. Mr Calwell in his communication to Mr Fraser has amended the previously expressed viewpoint, and to have stated that Maoris can enter New Zealand on the same footing as other New Zealanders.
