Grey County Council’s Work on Highways Estimated at £11,000

The Grey County Council at its meeting yesterday was told the details of work to .be carried out on Main Highways during the present financial year. Maintenance, improvements and renewal of works already done were included in the report presented by the Engineer, Mr. H. Higgins. The cost of the work was placed at £ll,OOO. On the Ngahere-Haupiri Junction highway, maintenance work was estimated at £2,000, of which the Grey County would find £5OO and the Main Highways Board £1,500, while sealing at Nelson Creek was estimated to cost £BOO (£2OO-£600). On the Haupiri Junction-Kumara highway maintenance work between Kumara and Mitchells was estimated at £1,320 (£330-£990), and the cost of flood damage at £4OO (£lOO-£300). Maintenance of the Ngahere-Blackball highway was assessed at £BOO (£2OO- - and £4,000, all of which would be contributed by the Main Highways Board, was budgeted for the raising of the Ngahere-Grey River bridge road above flood level and its preparation for sealing. Footpath sealing in Blackball to cost £846 and similar work in Ahaura to cost £3BO was also included. Mr. Higgins also reported that repairs to the Westport-Greymouth highway done during he year included the sum of £355 Greymouth-Puna-kaiki stretch, £4O for sealing at Barrytown, and £lO9 on repairs between Cobden Bridge and Runanga. For the first two projects a £3 to £1 subsidy had been allowed and for the latter a £4 to £1 subsidy. There was no comment on the estimates before they were approved. There were no highways that the Council was willing to revoke. This information was provided the Main Highways Board by the Engineer. The Highways Council had sought the County’s view on the following sections of road: Mitchells to Inchbonnie (71 miles), Haupiri Junction to south boundary of Brunner Borough (20 miles), Brunner to Blackball (5 miles), and Blackball to Roa (11 miles).
