WRESTLING OPEN AIR BOUT AT VICTORIA PARK
Something new in the way of wrestling and public entertainment on the West Coast will be staged on Saturday, May 22, when the first of a series of open air heavyweight wrestling contests between world famous matmen ’ will be held at Victoria Park at 10.45 a.m. At a meeting last evening of the Greymouth Boxing and Wrestling Association arrangements with the Trotting Club and West Coast Rugby League were finalised for the staging of the first open air heavyweight wrestling contest to be held in Westland. If this type of wrestling proves popular it is intended to' hold a contest every three weeks. The equipment necessary for the staging of this type of bout is being generously loaned to the local organisation by the Canterbury Wrestling Association. It is reported that the reason given for the holding of the bout on Saturday mornings is to avoid clashing with the football matches and racing broadcasts in the afternoon. Negotiations with Walter Miller, the famous wrestling promoter, by the the Association have largely been responsible for the decision to hold open air bouts in Greymouth. The Association lost all its equipment in the Town Hall fire last year, and hope to acquire their own property at a later date. Sub-commit-tees will meet next Monday night to consider the erection of equipment at the park. , It was resolved that 10 guineas be donated to the U.N.O. appeal for distressed children. LEVY v. HEFFNER P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, May 5 Butch Levy (17 stone 10 pounds), beat Dutch Heffner (16.6) by two falls to one in a professional wrestling contest this evening.
