Conditions were ideal for football □n Victoria Square on Saturday. The senioi’ game between Stars and Rovers resulted in a win for Rovers by 16 points to 6 points. There was some brilliant play and solid defence on both sides, with fine movements in which both bocks and forwards took part. Rovers backs handled well. ■Stars’ first points came shortly after the start, when Rovers were penalised, the full-back, A. Coleman, goaling. Shortly after this play was mostly in the forwards. Coleman missed with a penalty kick.. From then on the Rover pack anti the □acks started to throw the ball about and play went right up field, where the Star backs handled well, but were penalised. Rovers’ kick fell Short. From the drop-out Rovers livened up and from a scrum they hooked the ball and a good passing rush saw Strang cut through for a nice try. The kick missed, making the half-time score three-all. Stars adopted offensive tactics from the commencement of the second spell but were penalised. Rovers missed with the kick. The call was kicked to Coleman, who ran pas', a Rovers’ man. He then kiclol and following up. took play right mto Rovers twenty-five. Again the Rover backs combined, taking play down □eld,, where the ball beat the fullsack, and Ladner gathered it in to go □ver for a' try. Anderson converted Rovers 8, Stars 3. As the ball was kicked off the Star forwards, Ryan, Lawe, Walsh. Strang and Stuart handled well, the □all being kicked through to the Rover full-back, who marked. Rovers were penalised and R. Hawes was successful with the kick. Stars then coked like scoring, but play was held up through a player being injured. From a line-out right, on the goalline, Stars fought hard to gain a score, but Rovers cleared and play went right down field and from out □f the ruck Anderson dived over for a try and Ladner converted making the ' score 13-6 in Rovers favour. From the kick-off both sides made the game willing. From an opening Smallholme gathered the ball in and potted a field goal. Shortly after tn.? game ended. Rover 16, Stars 8. The referee was Mr R. Bratt. Star juniors were assembled in force to meet Rovers juniors. They won the game by default, as Rovers could not field a team. B School thirds played Star thirds at the Technical School grounds, the game resulting in a win for Tech by 6 to 3. _____ .
