'They visited the liner at the Royal Victoria Dock, London, and sealed the hatches. Later, the Food Minister, Mr Strachey, said the authorities were checking the losses of foodstuffs and were trying to discover • whether the losses occurred on arrival in Britain or during loading at the port of origin. There was not an enormous loss', but the Government was keen to reduce it to a minimuni. Mr Strachey said the Palana was not the first ship checked. He would not say whether the Palana was chosen for a special reason.
