Food Ships Are Searched for Losses

LONDON, April 20.

Ministry of Food officials last night made a surprise search of the F. and 0. liner Palana, which arrived from Australia with 12,000 tons of foodstuffs and hundreds of Red Cross parcels. 'They visited the liner at the Royal Victoria Dock, London, and sealed the hatches. Later, the Food Minister, Mr Strachey, said the authorities were checking the losses of foodstuffs and were trying to discover • whether the losses occurred on arrival in Britain or during loading at the port of origin. There was not an enormous loss', but the Government was keen to reduce it to a minimuni. Mr Strachey said the Palana was not the first ship checked. He would not say whether the Palana was chosen for a special reason.

LONDON, April 2'o. The Food Minister, Mr John Strachey, announced an increase in (he non-priority milk allowance from 2 1 . to 3-1 pints' weekly for each person as from April 25, because of a reasonal rise in production. Dried milk and infant foods from April 25 would be available only to children under 12 months, instead of I,wo years, as at present, Mr Strachey said. -
