RUNANGA NOTES

[Our own Correspondent] Mr Geo. E. English, Mayor of Runanga, presided at a public meeting held in Runanga for the United Nations appeal for starving children. It was decided to support the appeal and ask each worker in the district to donate ten shillings. The secretary appointed for the appeal (Mr G. R Brown) was instructed to contact all unions, sports bodies, local organisations and business peo n le, asking for their support. It was decided to open a special account and to pay all donations through the borough office. Official receipts will be given to all donors. Another public meeting is to be called on Monday, May 10. All present were elected to the committee, with power to add. A record turnover was shown in the balance sheet presented at the half-yearly meeting of the Runanga Co-operative Society. Total sales reached £40,476. Grocery sales totalled £18,509, boots £1768, drapery £9941. bakery £3955. carting £607 and £5693 from the Dunollie branch. Membership in the society decreased by 12 to 583. and capital invested decreased accordingly by £424 to £14627. The net profit recorded was £2,512 and this is to be distributed to members in the payment of Is 6d in the £ on purchases. The overhead expenses were slightly in advance of 145 per cent., and outstanding accounts increased by £650.

One trustee, the vice-president, and three committeemen retired and the following were elected: Vice-president, Mr R. McTaggart; committee, Messrs J. Kelly, J. Anderson and S. Braithwaite; .trustee. Mr W. Pattinson. The were arrived as recommendations from the man-agement-committee: That ice cream sales be discontinued: that the sale of timber be discontinued and that Mr J. McTigue be confirmed in his appointment as secretary-manager. Messrs F. Oakley, J. Kelly, S. Morris and J. Braithwaite were appointed to represent the society on the cooperative regional committee.
