BOOK ON SEA LIFE JUDGED AS OBSCENE

MELBOURNE, April 15. A Criminal Court jury to-day convicted Robert Shaw Close, author of the book “Love Me, Sailor,” and Georgian House, Proprietary, Ltd., of having published an obscene libel. Refusing to release Close on bail pending sentence, Mr Justice Martin said: “The man responsible for this work cannot quibble if he is sent to gaol.” The author, in evidence had said that the book, “Love Me Sailor” was a realistic work of art based on his imagination and his personal experience of the sea. Close denied that there was any matter in the book that could be described as obscene. He said the book dealt with the habits and language of men in sailing ships and that same characters were based on real personolities. Examined by his counsel, Mr F. R. Reynolds, K.C., Close said he did not think that the more respectable books on sea life had given a true picture.
