RUNANGA NOTES

(Our own Correspondent) RUNANGA, February 28. Mr and Mrs W. Richmond, of Mills street, left on Saturday lor Christchurch. Miss B. Richmond left on Saturday on a holiday visit to Wellington and Christchurch. Mr J. Aanderson junior left on annual leave by Saturday’s express for Wellington and Christchurch. Messrs J. Allan senior, Rattray and Fairley, of Denniston, were visitors to attend the funeral of a former Denniston resident, Mr Robert Fraser, on Thursday. Mrs F. Pinn and family, of Christchurch, left on Saturday after a brief visit to her mother, Mrs W. Dutton. Mrs J. Clelland left on Saturday for Nelson to visit her son Jack, who is in hospital. Mr and Mrs R. Coppersmith, of Christchurch, have taken up residence in R'unanga. Both are former residents. Mr L. Hall, conductor of the Greymouth Municipal Band, has returned from Dunedin where the band participated in the Centennial Band Contests. Mr Neville Armstrong has left for Wellington on his annual holidays. The Rev. Mr Lockhead, of the Central Westland division of the Presbyterian Church, visited the Midland Line district recently. Mrs R. Richmond, of Seddon Terrace, has returned from the Grey River Hospital, where she was a patient for a short period. Mr J. Guy, secretary of the Miners’ Union, is at present on holiday. Mr S. Curran, of the Huntly Deputees Union, was a visitor to the township recently. AU residents are keenly awaiting the return of the local members of the Kiwi team and this occasion will be honoured in a convivial manner. Th 0 local League club is keen to have the new playing field in order and players and supporters, during the week-ends work hard, with the assistance of a bulldozer, to complete the area. The field will be one of the finest in the district. The local tennis club members are proving themselves adept exponents of the game, winning recently, the Presidential Trophy from Greymouth and retaining it after a strongchallenge by Cobden in a match played on th e local courts on Saturday. The home players were: .J. Baddeley, Soster, Sparks and Boote, the last-named substituting for S. Kennedy, who is on annual holiday. The Runanga Cricket Club next week-end play Blackball in a match for the premiership of the district, the winners io play Hokitika for the championship of the West Coast. Tne local boys are fairly confident of beating Blackball. There is a movement on foot to again have a hockey team in the township, the team last season having done fairly well, as beginners. The committee of the recently formed Youth Club are to be congratulated on their efforts in fostering the idea of fortnightly dances for the purpose of supporting all local sporting bodies. So far they have had good attendances.
