CRICKET WELLINGTON’S RECOVERY IN MATCH WITH FIJI

P.A. WELLINGTON, Feb. 29. Forty-seven runs behind on the first innings, Wellington made a good recovery in the second innings against the Fijians at the Basin Reserve on Saturday, and are now 215 runs ahead with three wickets m hand. A glorious one-handed catch at short fine leg by Turuva, which was reminiscent of Hammond’s great slip catch in the M.C.C. versus N.Z. Test at Christchurch last year; two smart run-outs, and some powerful hitting by D. S. Wilson, were features of a bright day’s cricket. Conditions were ideal. The gate totalled £464, ( representing an attendance of 9,000. For the two days, the takings are £656.

Beautiful soft harmony singing by the visitors, just before the afternoon play began, made a big anneal to the crowd.

With several youn-g players fighting for a regular place in the Wellington representative side, the batting in the second innings was inclined to be over-cautious at times, but R. Phillips impressed as a likely opening batsman of the future. R. T. Barker’s display gave hopes that he may yet reproduce in representative games his attractive club form. The bulk of the runs were scored by two experienced cricketers in D. S. Wilson and A. McLean. The Fijian bowling stood up well to the test. The absence of a third man, particularly to the bowling of Isoa, was surprising. The batsmen, as a result, frequently were able to run three for shots backward of point.
