Residents Farewelled

Misses L. Hay-Mackenzie and L. Ryan left yesterday morning to take up positions in Wellington. With Misses B. Carey and E. Colvin, w‘io leave later in the week to reside ar Christchurch, they have been guests at a series of social gatherings at Westport during the past few days. Miss Hav-Mackenzie was presented with a token of their esteem from members of St. Canice’s Church choir with which she was prominently connected, also from ner fellow members of the staff of the Social Security Department. Miss HayMackenzie will be missed in social circles. She was always willing to contribute vocal items to local functions .while she was a consistently successful competitor >at ; Buller Competitions Society festivals. Miss Colvin was presented with a handbag bv Mr M. O’Dea at a gathering of his staff on Friday night, when he expressed regret at her impending departure, but wished her the best of luck in Christchurch. She has taken a prominent part in sport, having represented Buller at basketball and athletics, besides being an excellent hockey player. Misses Ryan and Carey have been very popular residents, the lastnamed having taken a keen interest in basketball and women's marching. They also have been the recipients of many tokens of goodwill.

Mr George Kearns, who has been prominent in Buller sporting circles in recent years, having played many fine ‘games for the representative Rugby side, was met on Monday evening by members of the Okl Boys’ Rugbv' and Cricket Clubs, when, on their'behalf, Mr T. Phipps, presented him with a writing set as a token of their esteem. He expressed regret at losing Mr Kearns, who had accepted a teaching appointment at Suva, but extended to him the best wishes of many sporting associates in his transfer. His remarks were endorsed bv Messrs J. Mason, M. Robinson, J. Griffiths, M. Benjamin and J. Banks (football club) and H. Dobson, F. Wood and M. Byrne (cricket club). Mr Kearns briefly replied.
