Cold Snap Kills Over Eighty People in Eastern U.S.A.
NEW YORK, Jan. 19
Already 81 persons have died in a sub-zero wave that is now sweeping the eastern seaboard States. The United Press says that 68 have perished in fires resulting from overheated furnaces. Thirteen have been frozen to death.
The biting cold extends from Tennessee and the Ohio River valleys eastward over the middle Atlantic States. Even, in Florida the temperatures are below freezing point. New York to-day recorded 7.2 degrees and Vermont 25 degrees below zero.
The cold wave, which has already lasted six days, has cut deeply into the nation’s dwindling fuel oil supplies. No relief is forecast.
