TYPHOON DEVASTATES ISLAND OF YAP

NEW YORK, Jan. 19.

A wall of water raised by a typhoon, has caused appalling destruction on Yap Island, the former Japanese base in the Western Pacific, and 1150 miles east of Manila,, according to reports from the United States Navy. More than 85 per cent, of the island’s 3000 population are homeless. Fifty-six United States Navy men and six families are safe. They are huddled on high ground to which they were driven by the sea, rolling in from the beaches. Forty-eight hours after the typhoon 'had almost levelled the island, huge waves swept across it.
