The War Office has appointed I'jLa-jor-General C. B. Callander to the newly-created post of director-gen-eral of military training.

Mr N. C. Shannon, a student at Auckland University College nas completed his B.A. degree. He is a son of Mr and Mrs J. A. Shannon, of Devon Street, Greymouth.

Mr D. S. Kennedy, Engineer to the Greymouth Harbour Board, is at present on a trip to the North Island, where he will visit Wellington and Wanganui.

Mr F. J. T. Grip" Government Analyst at Christchurch for many years has been appointed Director of the Dominion Laboratory in Wellington, and he will also be Domin»ja Analyst.

Mr J. W. .Mclntyre, chief surveyor for the Lands and Survey Department, Hokitika, has received notice of his transfer to Nelson to a similar position. Mr Mclntyre who has been in Hokitika some considerable time, leaves for Nelson to-morrow and will oe succeeded oy Mr E. M. Morilleau.

A French Catalina amphibian carrying Colonel Migeon, commander of the French Forces in New Caledonia, accompanied by his staff, arrived at Paraparaumu yesterday. It is understood there are to be negotiations on New Zealand co-opera-tion in the air services in the South Pacific. —P.A'.

The death occurred at Invercargill on Saturday of Mr John William Smith, founder of the firm of 11. and J. Smith, drapers. He was a prominent angler and the supporter of many pastimes and Southland activities. He leaves a wife and a grownup family.

Dr. Arthur Porritt, New Zealand’s representative on the organising committee for the Olympic Games, will leave London for Switzerland on January 27 to attend a committee meeting. As chairman of the suncommittee for medical services for the Games, he will repot’t on the arrangements being made.

The death occurred at Christchurch on Sunday evening of Mrs Olive Jane Muir at the age of 58 years. She was born at Kumara, out lived for many years in Blackball, where she was married, later moving to Seddonville and Moana. Of more recent years she had lived at Ladbrooks. She visited Greymouth during the New Year holidays, returning to her home at Ladbrooks last Tuesday. She is survived by her husband, Mr Andrew Muir, three sons, Les (Fox Glacier), Andrew Burnham), and Ronald (Ladbrooks), and one Mrs W. > Bailey (Springs Junction). The funeral will take place at the Karoro cemetery, Greymouth, to-morrow afternoon.
