THE TURF SPARE PART EXPECTED TO MAKE BOLD BID IN WELLINGTON CUP

Deprive Telegraph Fancy A feature about the field carded to contest the Wellington Cup at Trentham to-morrow, is the strong form background of the majority of those engaged. All the placed horses in the New Zealand Cup of 1947 are among the acceptors, while Balgowan, King’s Ransom and Howe, who fought out such a memorable finish in the Auckland Cup on Boxing Day, are also in the field. Then there are recent winners in Langue d’Or, Lord Elgin. Loyal Bian, Tremello, Desert Fox, Grill, Falconbridge, Beau Jewel and Spare Part, the latter’s victory on the second day at Southland bringing his tally up to four successes on end. To these must be added that game little battler, Signal Officer, winner of the Metropolitan at Riccarton. Although under a cloud at the moment, should he get to the post, he is sure to add colour to the contest. Trentham has always been regarded as the true test of a stayer, and a trio likely to give a good account of themselves over the two-mile journey are Spare Part, Beau Le Havre and King’s Ransom. Track conditions promise to be excellent for the opening day, conditions which may favour, the following:— Te Marua Highweight: Rotlinic, Beneve, Embrolita. Wellington Guineas: Tauloch, Great Trek, Magical. . Pencarrow Hack: False Step, Blue Pier, Trench Meter. Fitzherbert Handicap: Jolly Lass, Balkis. Swan Lake. Wellington Cup: Spare Part, Beau le Havre, King’s Ransom. Ruapehu Handicap: Horouta, Waimanu, Imprint. Telegraph Handicap: Deprive, Aggravation, Wantwood. Anniversary Handicap: Concrete, Selas, Palomino. FORM POINTS TO FOXFABLE IN PRESIDENT’S AT TE AROHA Big fields are down to parade at Te Aroha to-morrow, when the principal event to be decided is the President’s Handicap. Although he has not won for some time, the recent form of Foxfable has been good enough’ to suggest he would have a good chance among those engaged in the main event. Betting will 'be under the win and place system, and the following runners may come in for support:—

Manawaru Hurdles: Harris Tweed, Irish Fox, Airlie. Elstow Handicap: Ist. Division: Yusuf, Cosmoledo. 2nd. Division: Portland Bay, Willa. Electric Handicap: Cloyrayn, Golden Eulogy, Lady Brazen. President’s Handicap: F'oxfable, Black Ace, Frontier Mac. Wairakau Hack: Vigilantia, Queen Rey, Dukedom. Flying Handicap: Angeline, Old Scot, Theophilus. Morrinsville Hack: Levane, Alnajo, Quick March. Piako Handicap: Brockton, Swanee, Te Wepu. KEEN INTEREST IN TELEGRAPH HANDICAP [Special to “Argus”]. WELLINGTON, Jan. 15 There is a very strong field in the Telegraph Handicap, the open sprint on Saturday at Trentham and the clash of form from north and south should provide a contest little less interesting than the Cup. Top weight, Majesty, (9.6), has excellent .form in w'.r.a. events though his handicap efforts have not been quite so successful. He has won at Trentham, albeit in a small field. The usual handicap of a left-hand course will not be so strong as there is only the slight dog-leg bend in the six-fur-long course. Drawn fairly wide, Majesty should evade any scrimmages and can be expected to run really well. Wantwood won the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton with 8.12 and has been placed at three of his subsequent starts. He is not harshly treated though he appears to be rather close to Majesty. Southerners expect Irish Note ta go a great race on Saturday. He has had only one start since his enforced spell, running second in the Hazlett Gold Cup at Dunedin at w.f.a. If he is thoroughly fit and can stand up to the tracks, he should be prominent as he likes Trentham. Flowerburn won twice in four starts at Ellerslie which take- doing. He has advanced considerably in the weights in consequence and.may be held by Majesty. , Blue Trout won once at Ellerslie and is actually up 21b more than Flowerburn. She is a brilliant mare who has drawn No 1. Provided she avoids any trouble from that position and gets away satisfactorily she should provide strenuous opposition. Silver Link is reported backward, while Frances did not do very well over the holidays though she now enjoys a substantial reduction in poundage. AT TOP Or FORM Deprive, who may carry a little overweight to be ridden by his-train-er, T. Webster, is at the top of his form and can be counted on for a really good effort on his recent exhibitions. Another who should run very well on latest form is Aggravation, stablemate of the Cup favourite, Beau ]e Havre, and there are more unlikely possibilities than that they should take the double. Aggravation is in at a verv handy weight (8.2) but she has drawn out at 20. However, she is a speedy beginner anti should avoid all trouble out there. Specialist has been set for this race but, on recent form, may find the class a trifle strong though he likes the course. Patmos did *O2ll down south over the holidays and merits consideration. The fact that Broughton has chosen to ride The Pagan will bring him into some favour. He has had a good run lately (the horse), but may just lack that little bit of brilliance, as. may also Sea Fury, who will be finishing on. nevertheless. Brown Derby could do it if he would, but is a customer of moods. Cressida has her defeat of Aggravation at Stratford on a very short preparation to commend her and might prove an upsetting factor ip that form. Of the remainder, Ladyship and Castlebrae appeal the most. There is still a day’s work to go but at present the chances of Majesty, Irish Note, Blue Truot, Deprive and Aggravation have form appeal. WELL! NGToVsCRATCH INGS P.A. WELLINGTON. January 15. Scratchings to-day for the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s summer meeting were: Wellington Cup: Signal Officer and Tremello. Pencarrow. Hack Handicap: Tranbycroft, Exemplary, Ranger Boy,
