GREYMOUTH YACHT WINS S.I. FRESH WATER CHAMPIONSHIP
Ideal yachting conditions prevailed for the Moana Aquatic Club’s regatta which commenced at Lake Brunner on Wednesday. Yachts from several parts of the South Island competed yesterday in the main event, the South island Fresh Water Championship, for the Greenhill Cup, which was won in convincing style by the Greymouth yacht, Pop-Eye, sailed by A. Kroening.
A large crowd, encouraged by the fine weather which heralded the New Year, assembled at Moana to watch the events, culminating in the Greenhill Cup, in which yachtsmen from as far as Dunedin participated. A. Korening handled Pop-Eve in a confident manner, and from the outset, led the other competitors over the two-lap course. As the race progressed it could be seen that no other yacht could overtake him. Drawing towards the finishing line, Pop-Eye showed a clean pair of heels to win by three and a-half minutes. Judging by his recent successes in other yachting events held this season. Kroening’s win yesterday has shown him to be in a class of his own.
