Need for Unity in Europe

(Rec. 7.10). GENEVA, June 27. The Marshall plan for Europe has a tremendous dynamism behind it, but it is well to remember the impetus it might give. It might split Europe as easily as unite Europe, said M. Gunnar Murdal, Executive Secretary of the United Nations’ Economic Commission for Europe. “Europe is at the crossroads. The United Nations stands for unity, and the common men of all countries stand for unity. I know the United States sufficiently well to realise that the common man .in the United States wants the same thing”, he said. He saw no reason why the Economic Commission should not play a part in implementing the Marshall plan. He believed that Russia was favourably inclined towards using the Commission for operating the plan.
