DEATH OF EARL OF HAREWOOD

Viscount Larcelles Succeeds Him LONDON, May 24. The death has occurred of the Earl of Harewood, the husband of the Princess Royal. The Princess Royal and’ members of the Royal Family were with the Earl of Harewoed at his death. The news was immediately sent to Their Majesties at the Royal Lodge, Windsor, where they are spending the Whitsun holiday week-end. The Earl’s death occurred at 11.25 G.M.T. on Friday, but it was not announced till 8.30 a.m.' G.M.T. on Saturday. There will be no Court mourning for the death of the Earl of Harewood. The Royal Family will observe private mourning. A private funeral will be held at All Saints’ on Tuesday and memorial services will be hold at York Minster and' at Saint Mark’s, North Audley street, London on Thursday. Reuter's Court correspondent understands that arrangements for a luncheon at Buckingham Palace on Monday to celebrate Queen Mary’s 80th birthday, will not be affected. It is also understood that the presentation party, which this year ranks as a substitute for Courts, will take place on Wednesday, as had been arranged’. The Earl of Harewood had been in failing health for some time. He went recently to Harewood House near Leeds. Neither he nor the Princess Royal, because of the Earl of Harewood’s ill-health, was at Buckingham Palace to 1 welcome home the Royal Fmily from their South African tour.

George Henry Hubert, now Viscount Lascelles, succeeds to the title of Earl of Harewood. Pie was a Second Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards and was wounded and captured' in Italy on June 1944. He was a Counsellor of State, with his mother and the Duke of Gloucester during the King’s visit to South Africa.

Viscount Lascelles is an undergraduate of Cambridge. He went into residence at King’s College as a freshman, last January.
