GREY FIRES GIVE BRIGADE BUSY DAY
Greymouth picture-goers were on the spot to see the Greymouth Volunteer Brigade in action last night, when an outbreak of lire occurred in some rubbish between the rear of the Regent Theatre and the Westland. Auction Company’s premises in Mackay street at 10.38 p.m. The brigade was quickly on the scene, and a single lead' was run out from a hydrant in Herbert street. The flames were extinguished within a few minutes.
A large after-theatre crowd quickly gathered, and nearby cafes and milk bars were quickly emptied as people ran to the scene of the outbreak.
Serious damage was avoided earlier in the afternoon when the brigade, answered a summons to a fire in gorse and scrub on the seaward side of Cowper street, near the Franklyn street corner. The flames fanned by strong breeze, were rapidly spreading towards houses in the vicinitv,'but were soon quelled when a single lead of hose was run out. No damage was caused by either fire.
