500 JET AIRCRAFT ORDERED IN BRITAIN FOR SWISS DEFENCE
(Rec. 9.35) BERNE, May 23. It is officially announced that the Swiss Government has ordered from Britain some seventy-five De Havilland Vampire jet-aircraft at a cost of three million sterling. It is announced also that this is only the first step in the formation of a peacetime air force for Switzerland of- at least 500 aircraft of the latest type. The Government’s announcement added that the Government has decided to purchase Vampires because they are specially suited to alpine climbing.
