BRITISH objective defined for soviet BY THE TUC 14 rc ... 4

(Rec. 11.10). LONDON, May 22. The British Trade Union Congress pamphlet attacking Russia’s foreignpolicy, says that the British Government’s policy is an effort to judge all the questions o-n their merits; to seek, or accept, common action with the United States only .where there is a clear’ common interest; but in no case to be drawn into commitments which exclude the possibility of similar collaboration with Russia. The pamphlet declared: —

“It is said that our dependence on American supplies amounts to economic surfdom. But the stark fact is that no country, except America, is capable of satisfying our economic needs”.

The pamphlet adds: “The aim of an Anglo-American understanding is to prevent war, by proving to Russia that her aggressive anti-British policy is doomed to failure; and our hope is that, sooner or later, the Russians will realise that the policy which they have pursued since 1945 is both impracticable and unnacessary.

“Every historical precedent, suggests no Government will continue to pursue a policy whose failure is known to be certain”.
