N.S.W. Mine Engineers Continue Strike
SYDNEY, May 21. The engine-drivers on strike at the Cessnock coalfield did not resume work last night as had been hoped. The stoppage has so aggravated the chronic coal shortage that a crisis is approaching. The reserves held by the gas, power and rail authorities- are rapidly dwindling. Rumours that the strike was over last night did not eventuate, due to delay in an announcement from Canberra.
After telephone talks with the Prime Minister, Mr Chifley and the Minister of Supply and Shipping, Senator Ashley, the State president of the Enginedrivers’ Union recommended to the men that they should return to work at 11 p.m. yesterday. The men had previously agreed to do this if they were promised by the Government that a tribunal should be set up to investigate their conditions. Though Mr Chifley expressed himself as favourable to the proposal, the men decided to remain out until a Government statement Was made.
