Electricity Cuts In Homes Resented
AUCKLAND, April 9
Auckland mothers are really “letting their hair down” about the power cuts. Low rumblings of discontent are now heard all around the town.
Hon. Mrs. Mary Dreaver, M.L.C., telegraphed the Minister of Works, Mr. Semple: “Auckland mothers want to know why hotels, boardinghouses, restaurants and eatinghouses are exempt from cuts in water-heating.” Mr. Semple replied: “Sufficient water can be heated in small utensils for all essential requirements, but (this is not possible in establishments such as hotels and restaurants depending on electric supply. Moreover, commercial water-heaters, consume less than one per cent, and domestic heaters more than 27 per cent, of the total power used in the North Island for all purposes.” The mothers’ reaction is awaited here with trepidation. Number one machine at Karapiro
has now been running on .test for a considerable period, including a good time on full speed? Announcing this to-day the Minister of Works (Mr Semple) said that the tests so far had been very satisfactory and the department intended to have the unit generating for the benefit ot the whole system at the earliest possible moment.
“The situation will be eased a little when the first unit commences full supply 'and before the winter is over there is reasonable hope that most of the irksome resrictions may be lifted,” Mr Semple added.
