ATHLETICS Greymouth First Holder of P. Boot Memorial Shield

TIMARU, March 21

Teams of athletes from the West Coast, Christchurch, Ashburton, Waimate, Timaru, and Temuka, together with cyclists, including some of the most prominent riders in New Zealand, both amateur and professional, combined at the Caledonian ground, Timaru, on Saturday for the V. P. (Pat) Boot Memorial Sports conducted’ by the South Canterbury SubCentre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association and the Timaru Cycling Club. The principal competition of the day was that for the Boot Memorial Shield, a trophy given recently by the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club and the Timaru Harrier Club for competition annually by all athletic clubs in the South Island.

Greymouth will be the first holder of the Shield, a team of 25 athletes from this centre aggregating 23 points. Competition was keen, the winning team being in doubt until the last athletic event, and consequently there was a difference of only one point between the first three teams. ’Varsity (Christchurch) won points, the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club 22, and Ashburton 191.

The Neu Zealand high jump champion, J. H. Borland, made two unsuccessful attempts to clear the bar at 6ft 31 in—:>’in higher than the jump he made at Auckland recently, and which has been applied for as a New Zealand record. However, Borland cleared the bar at 6ft 21 in in the best jump ever recorded on the ground. In the women’s high jump, F. Power, of Greymouth, cleared 4ft Ilin. The Mayor of Timaru (Mr A. E. S.
