South Island Power Lessened by Drought: Rationing Possible
P,A. CHRISTCHURCH, March 24. “What will happen in the near future depends entirely on the weather, and, as I said in the House of Representatives last session, the possibility of power rationing in the South Island cannot be overlooked”.
The Minister of Works (Hon. R. Semple), made this remark in a statement oip the South Island power situation. Mr Semple explained that the effect of the low rainfall this year has been to make the situation uncertain. In the catchment areas little more than half as much rain has this year fallen as in the same period of last year. This has lowered the level of the lakes and the rivers. Mr Semple revealed that the demand for power has increased this year by 10.4 per cent., instead of by 7.5 per cent., which the Department had estimated it could safely carry. He gave a warning to the consumers to avoid any waste of power.
