AMERICAN DOLLARS NOW PLENTIFUL IN DUNEDIN
DUNEDIN, March 24,
Consistent delvers in the black market of currency, as also numerous amateurs, had a halcyon period during the visit to Dunedin of the Byrd expedition “gobs”. Many hundreds of dollars changed hands and a large proportion of the bills so collected are already in the mails to overseas countries.
New Zealanders proposing to go overseas on holiday and others interested in building up an external currency reserve were eager seekers of these classes of bills. The ruling rate of 6s buying was paid in most transactions, though an occasional sale at different prices has been reported, mostly at the expense of the American vendors.
It is illegal to send dollar bills out of the country or hold undeclared foreign currency.
