Golden Souvenir Fails in Australia In First Start

(Rec. 5.30) SYDNEY, March 23. The New Zealand stayer, Golden Souvenir disappointed yesterday when he finished last in the Rawson Stakes at Rosehill. His jockey, Darby Munro, said the horse did not go well at any stage of the race. He ran comfortably for the first half mile, and moved up close to.the leaders at the five furlongs, but his run stopped at the Leger. Golden Souvenir is to carry on with his original programme, which includes the Chipping Norton Stakes, and will start in the Sydney Cup if his next fortnight’s form is good enough. He is also being nominated for the Brisbane Cup.,

In the Rawson Stakes Columnist made his run early, secured a two lengths’ lead, and came home down the inside rail.

The Australian champion two-year-old, Temeraire, maintained his unbroken record by winning the MacArthur Quality Handicap by half a length, from The Groom. According to the jockey, Cook, Temeraire ran erratically after a bad start, and was in the ruck for most of the race Lady Ajax and The Groom did most of the challenging.
