Car Falls Into Wanganui River Drowning Young Man

P.A. WANGANUI, March 23. A drowning accident occurred in the Wanganui River a few’ minutes after midnight on Saturday, the victim being Donald lan Gilbert. 22, single of 16 Smitherneld Road, Wanganui. Gilbert and two others, including the driver, J. H. Connett were travelling after a dance at Upokongaro, seven miles from Wanganui. to Kawhaike, further up the river, when their car went over the bank, falling thirty feet into ten feet of water. .The other occupants got out, but Gilbert apparently was trapped in the back seat the body was recovered at daylight on Sunday in the car. Gilbert, was a prominent tennis, player, , representing Wanganui in the Christie Cup maten against Taranaki on Saturday. A similar drowning accident occurred in the river the previous Sunday morning. _
