HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). The Government architect, Mr R. A. Patterson visited Hokitika on Wednesday afternoon to consult the Fire Board in regard to the building of the new Fire Station. He pointed out that the foundation would have to be tested, and factual calculations for the roller type roof would be required. The Hokitika Borough Council as a contributing authority to the building was responsible to the ratepayers, and the Department desired to see that all the necessary points were covered. The building, a two storey ferro concrete one. would be large and until the Department’s officers were completely satisfied, could not go ahead. The Mayor of Hokitika) (Mr A. R. Elcock), Mr M. Wallace, County Chairman, the County Engineer, Mr Clark and Mr E. W Heenan, secretary of the Harbour Board, inspected the harbour mouth on Wednesday afternoon. The river had an outlet approximately 70 feet in width, an in once place had a fair depth. Ihe time was not opportune to cut the channel to the sea. There did not appear to be danger of excessive flooding, as the outlet was of a fair size, and with a flood would soon widen out. If a cut were put in at present, the incoming tide would most probably fill it again. Apart from hooding of low-lying areas, there did not appear to be any grave danger. Mr D. S. Kennedy, Engineer to the Greymouth Harbour Board inspected the- river on Thursday at low tide.

The matter of the new Post Office at Hokitika was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council. The Mayor (Mr A. R. Elcock), stated that the plans had been submitted to the Progress League. The Council, an. elected body, had been ignored by the Post-master-General (Mr Hackett). The question of moving the clock tower was discussed, the Progress League having suggested this. Fourteen new members were nominated at the annual meeting of the Excelsior Football Club, held in Hokitika this week. They were: E. G. Walker, R. McKenzie, A. Fry, IT. Sweeney, K. James, M. Duncan, B. Parker, D. Marsten, N. Roberts, P. Woolhouse, R. Bradley, J. Bottlik, F. Finch, E. Andrews. The election of officers for the ensuing season resulted as follows: — Patron, Mr J.
