The Acting-Secretary of State Mr Dean Acheron, said at a press conferenc that a Japanese peace treaty could not be negotiated until more nrogrcss had been made with the European peace settlement There-f.-rp the United States could not respond to General MacArthur’s call for nn early negotiation of a Japanese peace treaty. Asked whether the State Department approved General’ MacArthur’s speech before its delivery, he said he understood that General MacArthur spoke as the Supreme Commander of the Al lied powers in Japan.
