RUBBER MILL STRIKE

UNION’S OBJECTIVE CHRISTSCHURCH, Feb. 27. Following the settlement of the strike in the rubber mills, Mr G. W. Skellerup, Managing Director of Marathon and Empire Mills, when asked for his comment, said there was a misunderstanding. Mr A. B. Grant, secretary of the union said: “There was no misunderstanding on the part of the union, which was quite cleai’ as to what it wanted. We are concerned in Canterbruy with pulling Auckland workers up to our standard. Through what can only be termed ‘one of the imbecilities of the Arbitration Court, Auckland workers, who have to meet a higher cost of living than Christchurch workers, obtained by award of the court wage rates lower than those obtained by Christchurch workers in conciliation council proceedings
