French Success
IN INDO CHINA 600 Enemy Slain (Rec. 6.40). PARIS, February 22. Six hundred Vietnamese were killed and two hundred were captured during operations west of Hanoi, says the French Indo-China Headquarters, in a communique. Two Vietnam companies and one battalion were practically annihilated.* A message from Saigon says; A semi-official newspaper, Journal de Saigon, reports that a Cochin Chinese army of 7800 men, under French commissioned officers, has been formed to “pacify” .Cochin China, which is Indo-China’s richest province. The newspaper says that new units, which have already been in action against pro-Vietnam Annamese, are partly equipped with American weapons. French and foreign press correspondents have appealed to the commander of the French forces in the Far East. Major-General Jean Valluy, for an amelioration of the censorship that is so drastic and erratic that some correspondents have ceased attempting to send any significant news from Indo-China.
