The following are some interesting facts recorded in the sporting world, which will doubtless be of a surprise nature as well as of sound general knowledge to many sportsmen: — Ice hockey, the fastest game of all. sees the puck skimming the ice at 88 m.p.h. Bill Tilden’s tennis serve was timed at 125 m.p.h. Star golfers have had their drives clocked at the terrific speed of 88 m.p.h. The hardest penalty kick in soccer never reaches more than 3a m.p.h., which is equal to the speed of the Derby winners. Table tennis players of the quality of Victor Barna, smash the ball over the net at 50 m.p.h., but the average shots reach only one fifth of that speed. Harold Larwood, the English fast bowler, delivered the ball at 90 m.p.h. but Don Bradman was able to drive it to the boundary at 120 m.p.h. American baseball pitchers whip them down to the striker at 100 m.p.h. Joe Louis’s knock-out punch moves at 127 m.p.h., eight miles per hour slower than was the punch used by Jack Dempsey.
