Before Admiral Byrd evacuates ’he base about March 1, a flight across the South Pole region to explore an unknown stretch between Ross and Weddell Seas will be undertaken. One of six survivors of the flying boat which crashed on December 30 has had both legs amputated below the knee in an operation aboard the carrier Philippine Sen.
