BRITISH NAVY
LEAVES EGYPT Malta to be Main Base (Rec. 9.35). LONDON, Nov. 28. The Admiralty yesterday confirmed that the Royal Navy has evacuated Alexandria, which has for long been Britain’s' main Eastern Mediterranean base. The Daily Telegraph’s diplomatic correspondent says: “This is part of a general movement of all British forces from Egypt under the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty, a draft of which has been initialled by Mr Bevin and Sidky Pasha. Only three or four men, the Admiralty said, will remain in Alexandria to man a wireless station. The warships, the equipment, and other installations have been withdrawn. The warships hitherto based on Alexandria have been re-based at Malta. A British evacuation of Cairo and of Alexandria began on May 15 last. All the troops are leaving both places by March 31. 1947, and leaving the whole of Egypt by September 1, 1949.
