GAMING LAWS

AMENDMENT PROPOSED

At its monthly meeting the Grey Acclimatisation Society received for criticism a remit from the Southland Society which is .to be submitted to the Council of the South Island Acclimatisation Societies, the annual meeting of which is to be held in Christchurch this month. It read: (1) That authority similiar to that given under .the Fisheries Act, 1908, be given to a ranger under ' the Animals Protection and Game Act to search a car or other conveyance. (2) That provision be made under the Animals Protection and Game Act to permit of the issue of a search warrant by a Justice of the Peace—this* authority is given in the Fisheries Act, 1908, and would bring the two Acts (into line. (3) That Section 12 of the Animals Protection Act and Regulation Six of the Animals Protection and Game Regulations be redrawn to clarify the position affecting automatics.—The Grey society supports this clause but deems it’ advisable to add “'the position affecting repeaters also.” (4) When a party of two or more, together shooting, imported and/or, native game in any one day, take or kill, more of such imported, and/or, native game than the aggregate legal limit of such persons, then such persons shall be deemed to have taken or killed the imported and/or native game, so taken or killed in excess of the legal limit. (5) That Section 96 of the fisheries Act. 1908, be amended to make it an offence to give a false name and address. ‘(6) That the royalty be taken off-keas, except in country used as sheep runs on the ground that it is a native bird. (7) That" each Acclimatisation Society be permitted to nominate a representative on the Catchment Board operating in its district with a view to protecting the interest of the society. The members of the society stated that they would give the remit their support and a motion to this effect was adopted.
