Menace to Safety

BENTHAM STREET CROSSING Commenting at the monthly meeting of the Westport Federated Farmers, on the danger to pedestrians and motorists by trains shunting across the Bentham Street railway crossing, Mr H. Martin said that the fact that trains working between the flaxmill and the coal ramps, constituted a menace. He contended that if no other warning device was erected, a crossing-keeper should be employed at this point, especially when shunting operations were being carried out at night. The chairman (Mr L. Mockett) was of the opinion that the erection of an overhead bridge was worthy of consideration. After considerable discussion, it was resolved that the Minister of Railways (Hon. R. Semple) be approached on the matter of providing a suitable warning or safety device, and that? local bodies in the Buller district be asked to support the request.
