COUPON CAMPAIGN
Results to Date SUPPORT INCREASING P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 27." “New Zealanders have found, from their own rationed supplies, one week’s ration of meat for two million Britons, and one week’s ration of butter for 480,000 'Britons,” said the chairman' of the National Famine Emergency Committee, Mr T. N. Smallwood to-night, commenting on the five months’ progress of the coupon-saving campaign. In these twenty weeks, he said, more than 3930 thousand meat and 175 thousand butter coupons had been contributed. The monetary value of meat alone was nearly fifty thousand pounds. Support for the campaign now appeared to be increasing. For the first two days of this week 9943 butter coupons and 182,466 meat coupons had been given. So far during the campaign, smaller centres had done better than larger centres. Christchurch being the only main centre to be placed in the first four in the weekly totals. Gisborne had recorded a great achievement, haying been first eight times, second six times and third twice. It had been honed to have leaflets dropped from the “Aries” as. she flew over New Zealand, but this had proved impossible owing to modifications to the stru.ctui’e of a recordbreaking plane. An effort was now being made to have a R.N.Z.A.F. plane fly over various towns at the same time as the “Aries,” and leaflets would be dropped from the R.N.Z..A.F. plane. During the past week 5193 butter and 163,503 meat coupons were saved, Gisborne being the first for the week.
