EXTENSIVE DAMAGE

Brisbane Meatworks Blaze MEAT FOR BRITAIN LOST (Rec. 7,40). BRISBANE, August 26. Damage estimated at hundreds of thousands of pounds was caused by a fire at Borthwick’s meat works, Brisbane, to-day. Freezing and chilling rooms were damaged, and a large quantity of meat awaiting shipment to England was destroyed. About 2000 tons of meat were in the rooms, but it is not known yet how much was lost. At the height of the fire, the British freighter, Clan Colquhoun, which was at the wharf waiting to load the meat, moved into midstream, and was taken to another wharf out of danger. Idle employment of more than 400 met is affected by the fire. It will be some time before the plant can resume operations.
