More Powerful Transmitters PLANS FOR 3ZR DUNEDIN, August 2'6. “The Government is pleased to announce that it will be possible to implement certain of the proposals which were held over during the war period for the improvement in the coverage of stations of the New Zealand Broadcasting Service,” said Mr. Jones, Minister-in-Charge of Broadcasting, this morning. “The improvements are necessarily limited through the heavy demands’ at present being made on building resources, and so as not to increase these demands the broadcasting services will utilise surplus buildings available from the War Assets Realisation Board as temporary accommodation.” “It is proposed,” said Mr. Jones, “to establish broadcasting studios at Rotorua, with a transmitter in a suitable locality. When building materials are available another studio will be located at Taraung'a. The existing station at Greymouth will be replaced by a more powerful transmitter.” The Minister added that, certain transmitters which had reached an advanced stage of obsolescence would be replaced. The present transmitter equipment at stations IYA, 2YA, and 4YA' would be replaced with more up-to-date transmitters. The improvements would not involve any extensions to the present buildings Tenders had been called for the equipment, he said, but as the manufacturers required approximately 18 months before they would be in a position to supply goods and as the transport situation was difficult it would be some time before it would be in operation.
