MILK STRIKE
LONDON WORKERS SEEK £6 AND 40-HOUR WEEK / LONDON, August 25. An unofficial strike of workers of • co-operative milk societies has left I more than one million people with- ;; out milk in London, Kent and Suf- I folk. :■ The men’s union, the distributive ; workers, disown the strike. The ex- - tent of the strike widened with the decision of the workers in a second 2 co-operative society bottling plant to - cease handling supplies. As a result I eight depots are affected. The men " complain that they have been waiting ; - for 15 months for a new award, which ) w‘as announced when direct action * was threatened. It provided for a ■ 44 instead of a 48-hour week and £4 - 19s minimum for day and, £5 16s for ■; night workers. The men are still dis- t satisfied and are now reported to be ; asking for £6 minimum and also a I 40-hour, five-day week. . ’ More than 1,000,000 persons in London are doing without milk or attempting to find alternative sources ■ of supply. A union leader’s “peace posse” is driving from depot to depot appealing to striking dairy * to resume work.
