LAND ACQUIRED
SERVICEMEN’S SETTLEMENT WELLINGTON, Aug. 12. Apart from 214,000 acres previously held by the Crown and included in the servicemen settlement plans part of which has already been alloted by ballot —a total of 237,398 acres had until the end' of June been acquired under the provisions of the Small Farms Act (1932-33) for the establishment of ex-servicemen on the land, says a statement from the Rehabilitation Department. There was also 11,279 acres which had been taken under Part 11 of the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act, 1943, and three further properties acquired under Setion 51 of the same legislation. Recent acquisitions included 5671 acres previously the property of Viscount Doneruile, situated 34 miles south of Gisborne. Others were 2922 acres and 566 acres previously 7 belonging to Messrs A. S. Elworthy and J. C. Elworthy respectively, ana about eleven miles from Timaru; 450 acres previously the property of Mr A. N. Gibbons; situated three miles from Morrinsville; and 250 acres seven miles south of New Plymouth, previously the property 7 of Mr W. T. Petersen.
Properties taken under Section 51 of tlie Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Act total 55,655 acres in area and are capable of sub-divis>on into 2'61 single units.
During June no fewer' than 105 farm sections were ballottea' for amongst ex-servicemen applicants, the properties being situated in almost every part of the Dominion,
