Mrs L. Somerville, of Mawheraiti. left for Christchurch by last evening’s rail-car.

Miss M. Ryan, who is the guest of Mrs Quinlan, Thompson Street, leaves this morning on a holiday vis'.t to South Westland.

Mesdames J. Wafer, J. Hewison and Mr and Mrs Shotton left on last evening’s rail-car to attend the funeral of the late Mrs S. Hewison, formerly of Dunollie, at Dunedin.

The new Chief Justice, Mr H. F. O'Leary, took the oaths of allegiance and office before Mr Justice Smith and in the presence of Mr Justice Johnston yesterday.

Mr G. E. F. Wood, who has been appointed Government Statistican in succession to Mr J. W. Butcher, began his education here at the former District High School, going later to Waitaki Boys’ High School and Victoria University College. He spent seven years in the Middle East, serving on important committees and earning recognition for his statistical ability.

The death of Mr Albert Henry Intemann occurred last evening at Runanga, at the age of 80 years, after a brief illness. A native of London, Mr Intemann came at the age of ten to New Zealand, and for a nuniber of years lived a - Havelock. He later became a stevedore at Westport for the Union S.S. Coy., and continued for forty-two years in that capacity, retiring fourteen years ago. For the past five years lie had resided in Runanga with his son-in-law, Mr G. H. Gaskell. He leaves a family of four daughters, Mesdames L. Mundy (Christchurch), F. Oldham and F. McLean (Westport), and A. Hastings (Wellington), and three sons, Albert (New Plvmouth), Harold (Westport), and Harry (Greymouth). The funeral takes place to-morrow afternoon at Westport.
