Reminiscent of the war period Army convoys, was the departure from Auckland this morning of a fleet of former Army vehicles which are .supplementing the curtailed railway goods services. Twenty trucks carrying 100 tons of general merchandise for destinations north and south in the province were used today for the first time. The trucks will be back-loaded for their return to’ the city. They will again be loaded this evening for an early start tomorrow morning. More ’ trucks are available if necessary, and’ there" are sufficient drivers for an increase in the service if the coal situation deteriorates further.

AUCKLAND BALLOON RISES 18 MILES AUCKLAND, June 25. _ The remarkable height of 95,885 feet, or 18.1 miles, was reached by a radiosonde balloon released from the Auckland weather office at Mechanics’ Bay on Sunday morning. This is the greatest height to which such a balloon has ascended in the experience of meterological officers in Auckland, the average level being about 60,000 to 70,000 feet.
