HOSPITAL BOARD

DISCUSSION ON RATING A letter was received from the Waikato Hospital Board objecting to the present system of hospital rating. Hon. W. H. Mclntyre moved that the letter be sent to the various local bodies in the district as suggested, so that they may take whatever action they desire to approach the Government for some measure of relief from the present system of taxation. —The motion was carried. Domestic Staff Shortage POSITION SERIOUS The Buller Ho'spital was faced with a serious position as regards the shortage of domestic staff, said the Medical Superintendent, Dr E. Nansen, at a meeting of the Buller Hospital Board yesterday. Unless an improvement was effected he would have either to discontinue supplying morning and afternoon teas and suppers to both staff and patients, or to admit only urgent cases to the hospital, or to restrict visiting hours to one day a week. Pie was authorised to take whatever action he thought advisable. PRESS TO BE ADMITTED It was decided that in future the Press be admitted to monthly meetings of the Hospital Board from 10 a.m. instead of 2 p.m. as in the past. WIDESPREAD FIRES. With a strong easterly vind blowing on Sunday and yesterday, which at times was of gale force, a few scattered fires soon assumed widespread proportions, especially round Sergeant’s Hill. Thirty feet of the cemetery fence on the main road was burned, and a shed belonging to Mr Winter, in the vicinity of McKenna’s Creek. A fairly large blaze was noticed near Deadman’s Creek bridge on the Fairdown-Westport road. FIRE ALARM. The Westport Fire Brigade was called out yesterday at about midday, due to a menacing gorse fire at the corner of Derby and Packington Streets. No property was endangered, however, and the blaze was quickly under control as a result of the prompt and efficient action by the Brigade.
