HOKITIKA NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent!. HOKITIKA, June 24. Following engine overhaul at Port Nelson the Gael will return to Hokitika on Wednesday with a cargo of cement, and after discharge will load for the southern ports, Okuru and Jackson Bay. After the southern trip the vessel will transport a cargo of silver pine posts to Wanganui. Two of Hokitika’s oldest shops will disappear this week, the premises of Mr H. C. Peart, and the premises adjoining, belonging to Mr Kennedy. Both shops will be dismantled, and a new and modern concrete shop will be erected. Messrs Gilchrist and E. G. Kennedy intend to commence their, business of furniture manufacturers. The new shop will greatly enhance the shopping area at this centre. A start has been made with the building of a new residence at the Sea View Mental Hospital for the assistant medical superintendent. The re-decorating of the Regent Theatre was completed over the week-end and the re-opening is scheduled for to-day (Monday), after a close-down period of two weeks. The theatre presents a pleasing appearance, and the lighting has been completely re-modelled. Strong winds occurred at Hokitika on Sunday afternoon and continued on until Mohday. The day was fine, except for slight showers. No damage was reported from the wind. A meeting, of the Westland Power Board is to be held in Hokitika on Tuesday evening to consider a motion for the amalgamation of the Westland Power Board and the Grey Electric Power Board.
