NATIONALISATION

A PEER’S CRITICISM. LONDON, May 15. Lord Teviot in the House of Lords started a debate on nationalisation. He asserted that in a year or eighteen months there would be a serious ciisis as a result of the Government s policy, which he asked the Govrenment to postpone, and asked that industry be freed from control. His motion, he said, arose from anxiety felt by many in touch with current affairs at a dangerous situation to which the country was rapidly slipping. The crisis would affect recovery from the war, cripple industry and bring great suffering to the people. He wondered whether the Ministers took into consideration the; experience of other countlies which had embarked on that type of legislation and which had to withdraw it, at great cost to the nation. He said that firms, shackled by the nationalisation programme, were unable to °. n with their business, though their books were full of orders. Lord Winster, replying, said the Government kept the needs oi the export trade constantly -in mind. Each industry was being looked at on its merits. The nationalisation proposals were made on the grounds of national security. The Government now proposed to take the logical step of bringing the distribution city, as well as generation, under public ownership. He said the aircraft industry would not be nationalised. The motion was withdrawn. ARE YOU AFRAID OF FAILURE?
