TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

FIRST MEETING IN GREYMOUTH. The first meeting of the recently formed Townswomen’s Guild was held in Harker’s Tea Rooms on Wednesday when Mrs J. A. Pearson, who presided, extended a welcome to the 24 women who attended. She said that the aims of the Guild were to encourage education of women to enable them as citizens to make their best contribution towards the common :ood; to serve as a common meeting ,;round for women, irrespective of creed, party ( and race, for their wider education, including social, intercourse.

Congratulatory telegrams were received from the Dominion president, who stated that Greymoutn was the 25th guild to be formed, and extended an invitation for two delegates to attend a Dominion conference to be held on September 19. Other messages were received from the Dominion executive, and from the organiser of the Christchurch branch. On the motion of Mesdames Parfitt and Fogarty, it was decided that other women’s organisations in Greymouth be approached on the matter of building a meeting room in the town for women’s organisations. Mrs Parfitt'stated that when the Women’s Centre was built, provision was made for erecting an additional room on the second floor. It might, be possible for the guild to give a lead in the matter. She suggested that if each interested organisation could raise £250, it would build and furnish the room.

On the motion of Miss Murphy and Mrs T. Higgins, it was decided to form a committee for hospital visiting. Mrs Parfitt said that there were many people in hospital, and especially in the Old People’s Home and Saltzman block, who had no friends in; town, and who would welcome visitors. It might also be possible to organise entertainments for the inmates.
