HANDLING OF SHIPS

Loading Going Well WATERFRONT CONTROL COMMISSIONER’S STATEMENT. P.A. .WELLINGTON, May 15. “The loading of ships is going very well, but not so the discharging, which leaves much to be desired in Wellington and Auckland, but improvement is looked for in the discharging of vessels at these two ports,” said Captain J. F'rice, Waterfront Control Commissioner, to-day. “Facilities for discharging at Wellington are better than the discharging facilities at Auckland. At other parts of the Dominion loading and discharging are proceeding exceedingly well. During the last three months twenty-two overseas vessels have been handled and some excellent loading has been done. “At Port Chalmers, Nelson, Napier and New Plymouth, excellent work has been done and high figures shown. Discharging at Auckland still leaves much to be desired. The success of the contractural system is much more pronounced at the smaller ports, which appeal’ to have a better appreciation of its benefit.”
