GREY HOSPITAL BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING At the monthly meeting of the Grey River Hospital Board on Tuesday evening,’ there were present, Mr. J. Oakley (Chairman), Mrs. D. Parfitt, Messrs. W. N. Gutbertlet, J. Stokes, J. B. Kent, A. Mosley, R. Clark and H. G. Carter. A letter was received from Mr. R. J. tlenham stating that he wished to take over the catering for patients as regards cigarettes, confectionary and newspapers, and asking for sole rights for the trade.—lt was decided to advise him that the board had no objections to his catering for the patients in those respecTs, but that no sole rights w'ould be delegated for such catering.
Hon. Secretary, Greymouth SubCentre of the Red Q'ross, advised that the Patriotic Shop opposite the Town Hall, would shortly be made available to the Society for re-erection in the hospital grounds for use as a canteen and.asking if a site could be made available. —It was decided to advise the Red Cross Society that while the board was sympathetic to such proposals, it was unable to provide a suitable site adjacent to the Outpatients' Department, and that if desired, a member of the Hospital Committee would discuss l the matter with the local branch.
The secretary of the West Coast Women’s Institutes wrote suggesting that the board advertise for the position of dietitian at the hospital. It was stated that according to the new scales, a qualified dietitian would have to be paid at the rate of 1400 a year, with free board, residence and uniforms. a
It was decided to reply that the Medical Superintendent had control over all diets and that if they were not up to standard he had power to take action in the matter.
Sister C. Hay-McKenzie inquired if the board had decided to grant holiday pay to members of the staff who had returned from active service.— The secretary was instructed to make inquiries as to what action other hospital boards were taking in the matter.
Reporting to the Hospital Committee on the doctor’s residence, Mr. Mosley said that arrangements for the occupation of the sometime Nurses’ Home at Oranui Hospital had been finalised.—Mr. Mosley’s actions in that matter were approved. The Medical Superintendent reported that at the end of March there were 71 male and 48 female patients remaining in the hospital. During the month 84 male and 76 female patients were admitted and 80 male and 69 female patients were discharged. Theree males' and three females died in the hospital during the month, and at the end of the month there remained in the hospital 72 males and 52 females.
Sixteen mothers and 13 babies remained in the Mcßrearty Ward at the end of March; 42 patients' were admitted during April; there were 36 confinements and 36 babies born. At the end of the month 14 mothers and 12 babies remained in the ward. There were 146 ante natal attendances during the month. The payment of accounts amounting to £6,173 17s 5d was ratified.
