Opera House
Finally To-night: “Minstrel Man and “Deerslayer.” Next Attraction (tomorrow): “Casanova in Burlesque. “CASANOVA IN BURLESQUE” Joe E. Brown that lovable chap with the gap in his yap, is coming back in the wittiest, whackiest musical comedy of his career “Casanova in Burlesque,” commencing at the Opera House to-morrow (Friday). The story is built around the tangled shreads of Joe’s double life. As Summers, he follows his father’s footsteps, and is a star of the burlesque show, as Winters, he takes his dignified place as a college professor of Shakespeare with the school much dependent on talkative dowager Marjorie Gateson’s financial backing and her annual Shakespearean festiva. Joe is asked to produce the show, with Miss Gateson casting herself in the leading roles, also her piece Dale Evans. Da'e, however, plays another dual personality, switching from high society to a swing band singer, am. giving Joe a helping hand when troubles gather around him. The festival looks headed for trouble when June Havoc steps in and- dainnt down on the luckless Joe. To get publicity she wants the lead, and her reading of lan Keith’s saturine Romeo is a highspot of the picture. -Everything warms up to a good hilarious finale with the entire burlesque cast putting modern pep into “Taming of the Shrew.” For a laughable evening of entertainment you cannot afford to miss “Casanova in Burlesque,” a racy rhythmic of laughs, song and romance. Regent Theatre Finally To-night: “American Romance.” Commencing To-morrow: “Here Come the Co-eds,” with Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. A new Abbott and Costello picture is always something to look forward to for people who enjoy a good laugh. According to reports, however, their latest film, “Here Come the Co-eds”, which commences at the Regent Theatre to-morrow, is not only another hilarious Abbott and Costello treat, but a movie spiked with many additional entertainment elements. It features, in support of the comedians, the Hour of Charm All Girl Orchestra, under the direction of Fhil Spitalvy with Evelyn and her magic violin. In addition to the thirty-five musicians of Phil’s All Girl Orchestra, the picture features a trio of lovelies
in the persons of Peggy Ryan, Martha O’Driscoll and June Vincent. The trio girls are seen as co-eds in an exclusive college where Bud Abbott and Lou Costello are assistant caretakers. Lon Chaney is the head caretaker, and one of the villians of the piece. The part represents a change of pace for Chaney, incidentally, as this time he is comically villainous instead of seriously so. To raise the necessary funds to save the old school -from going undei’ the auctioneer’s hammer, they engineer a girls’ championship baseball game and a wrestling match, with little Lou Costello getting hilariously involved in both. One of the funniest film scenes ever pictured is said to be that in which Costello, masquerading as a girl, plays in a bassball game opposite a team of Amazons —every girl of which is over six feet, tall. Donald Cook attends to the romantic phase of the film, opposite Martha O’Driscoll —but as in all Abbott and Costello pictures, the accent is on comedy.
